To assure an effective and efficient Public Access Defibrillation response the DES has instituted an AED maintenance program. This program will assist in assuring that the needed equipment is adequately maintained and in good working order. The PAD program guidelines require each facility to designate two AED unit custodians. The AED custodians are tasked with and responsible for performing routine inspections of each unit assigned to the facility or vehicle.

The unit custodians are required to perform weekly "spot check inspections" and a full inspection on a monthly basis. Unit custodians shall perform and document AED inspections for each unit designated to the custodian. Inventory management includes checking the emergency supply kit, AED battery and AED operation. Weekly tests should be conducted every Tuesday with monthly inspections on the first Tuesday of every month. For a specific list of maintenance requirements please read the comprehensive AED Maintenance Program Manual.

All AED custodians shall document their monthly, full inspection of the AED unit using the online inspection form. Use the AED Full Inspection Guidelines flier as a reference for the information required.

Should any equipment be missing or if the AED fails to meet any of the inspection standards, contact the EMS Division immediately at (914) 231-1616. DES will make arrangements to replace and repair any damaged or missing equipment.
